Cervelo R5 Dura. Currently weighing in at a lovely 6.75kg.

It’s a toss up between my Mavic 125th anniversary short sleeve jersey (I do tend to like all things yellow) or my Billy Bilsland single speed made by the man himself in the 1980s!

Favourite Local Ride:

Historically anything that involved a run up the Crow, but living by Cathkin Braes now I do enjoy a turn up the Cathkin climb.

Next Purchase:

A nice steel frame made with Reynolds 953 or a Cinelli XCR.

2.1-2.5” – Fat tyres are more fun!

Number of Bikes Owned:

5 bikes – not including bikes in bits!

Favourite Bike:

My Saracen Myst Downhill Bike – After a long wait for the bike it finally landed at the back end of 2017 in time for the 2018 DH race season, and has seen me dramatically improve my riding over the years. It’s not a bike that I get to ride a lot at the moment and the requirement to get it carried to the top of the hill is one that quite heavily limits my ability to get out on it as much. It’s the bike I should really sell however over the years on the Myst I’ve had some of the best days riding I’ve ever had on a bike. Memories of countless races and excellent days out with pals just brings a grin to my face every time I lay eyes on it. I’ve also done a lot of tinkering with this bike and there aren’t many original parts left on it, making it a bike that I have really made my own and have come to love. I just can’t bring myself to move this bike on to a new owner despite it being not much more that a very saucy living room ornament!

Favourite Piece of Kit:

Merino Socks! Say goodbye to numb toes even with wet feet!

Favourite Local Ride:

Has to be the Old Kilpatrick trails. They’re the closest thing that Glasgow has to offer for gravity riding, although you really have to earn the descent – Old Kilpatick’s climb to Loch Humphrey is one of the most brutal out there!

Next Purchase:

Well I’ve just picked up the Genesis Fugio gravel bike so really need to concentrate on getting out on that before I start considering another purchase! Will probably be tyres though as I’m always wanting to test out new rubber.

Optimal Tyre Size:

All depends on conditions and terrain but the tyres I find on my bike the most are 2.4WT Maxxis Minion DHRII front and rear. The maxxis Wide Tyre (WT) tread options make the biggest difference for me and the Minion DHRII I find nice for most riding conditions.

Number of Bikes Owned:

At the moment a slim line duo. 2.Santa Cruz Nomad and Norco Rampage DJ bike.

Favourite Bike:

For all round versatility and dream brand it has to be my current Santa Cruz Nomad. It can ride everything I want, from small local trails to the gnarliest of DH tracks, the Nomad is an alround beast. For the raw flavour of life however, nothing beats a Downhill Bike. Sadly no longer own one but my Mondraker Summum race bike from 2012 was an incredible machine and we shared some special memories.

Favourite Piece of Kit:

Full Face Helmet! Nothing like pulling a full face on ready to drop in.

Favourite Local Ride:

I enjoy riding all my local trails and probably frequent cathkin braes the most, but given the option I would normally travel slightly further a field. The jaunt over to Stirling and cambusbarron quary is always a good time and there’s a trail for everyone with some big jumps to add to the mix. To find the more challenging stuff I make my way down to the borders or up north to Glencoe and Fort William. The Glofie in Innerleithen and the Nevis Range in Fort William being solid favourites of mine to get the heart pumping.

Next Purchase:

My heart says a Downhill bike and my brain agrees!Let’s see what happens for next season…

mechanic/grease monkey/oily rag

Optimal Tyre Size:

It was 23’s, but I have made the bold transition to 25’s. It was a big step.

Number of Bikes Owned:

4 – Genesis Equlibrium, Van Nicholas Amazon Ti, Cannondale Bad Boy, Orange Carb-O which is currently in bits…still counts though.

Favourite Bike:

My genesis equilibrium is a belter, classic mechanics bike put together from various parts all topped off with a pair of salvaged carbon bars cut down to hill sprint format. It is my rapid commuter and gloriously frankensteinian.

Favourite Piece of Kit:

My Ortlieb messenger pro back pack. It has all the room you need, is very comfortable, fully waterproof and bright orange. It has lasted me close to 10 years now and innumerable KM’s all over the world.

Favourite Local Ride:

I had a great time riding from the shop in Saltmarket, through Mugdock and out past carbeth, all off road thanks to Barry and his savvy Garmin route planning. He even gave me a shot of his lovely campagnolo ekar equipped gravel machine.

Next Purchase:

I’ve got my eyes on a Pinarello Grevil, or a Whyte 9 series hard tail.

Position:

Toilet Trained Grease Monkey (Mechanic)

Optimal Tyre Size:

40C

Number of Bikes Owned:

Four – Bombtrack Arise, Cannondale CAADX, Mondraker Dune, Surly Ogre

Favourite Bike:

Cheap, easy, simple, can rag it about without too much concern. If you thought I was describing myself there you wouldn’t be wrong but I was in fact on about my Bombtrack Arise (2014). A delightful wee bike and I’ll be devastated when it goes.

Favourite Piece of Kit:

Shimano SPD sandals. For anyone wanting to go pro or seriously upgrade their performance these are a must. Looks stylish with socks too! (The opinions expressed here are the author’s own and do not reflect those of Billy Bilsland Cycles)

Favourite Local Ride:

Anywhere that has two trees roughly a hammock’s length apart from each other. Cycling is good but so is lounging in a hammock.

Next Purchase:

Probably my dinner but if we’re talking about bikes then another Bombtrack Arise when I inevitability write that off. This is not sponsored by Bombtrack but if they do want to sponsor me and give me free stuff then please get in touch.

Optimal Tyre Size:

2.8″ the chunkier the better

Number of Bikes Owned:

Three – Croix de Fer Ti, Cannondale Habit Full Sus and Genesis Tarn Hardtail

Favourite Bike:

My Croix de fer Ti – Built in 2020 for getting out more and what better encouragement than a new bike. Chosen as I love steel bikes and wanted something a little special. So Titanium was the only way to go. Exploring is the aim with this bike, having that option to find the hidden path or ride comfortably through some of our crumbling roads. Something I took as a challenge on our black ride day. I aimed to stay off the roads as much as possible, finding abandoned paths and some mud which the bike handled awesomely. It does everything and it does it great. From road miles, graveling adventure and commuting. It also looks gorgeous.

Favourite Piece of Kit:

Dropper seatpost – A godsend on the mountain bike. Don’t think I could have a mountain bike without one now.

Favourite Local Ride:

Forest trails at Lanark/Wishaw. They are a small collection of short handmade trails with varying difficulties and conditions. Great for sessioning and riding with mates. It also has a punchy climb to get the heart going.

Next Purchase:

It will probably be an e-bike. Something to take the hills away. Just to make the most of riding, getting more done in the short amount of time I get for riding.

Optimal Tyre Size:

Depends on what I’m riding, 28c for road, 37c for Gravel and 2.3 on the rear with 2.6 on the front for MTB.

Number of Bikes Owned:

4 – Cannondale Supersix, Cannondale Topstone, Yeti SB6 and Ridley Jane SL, not to mention the 13249000 sets of wheels…

Favourite Bike:

My (now retired) Ridley Jane SL race bike. This bike was actually gifted to me by Neil back when I used to race road full time in my teens. It’s been all around the world with me racing UCI’s and out to training camps in Calpe Spain. My Ridley is my favourite bike because of all the amazing memories that we had, from winning national titles to getting my ass kicked in the mountains during the Tour de Feminin in the Czech Republic. She is now hung up on the wall in my house, as a reminder of those memories during that whirlwind time of my life, now only ridden on special occasions.

Favourite Piece of Kit:

Bibshorts/Bibtights, basically anything with a chamois, nothing worse than a sore backside!

Favourite Local Ride:

My favourite local ride has to be the back lanes through the farms around Auldhouse and Strathaven. Not a car in sight, they almost feel like a cycling highway as it’s only ever bikes you see on them. Endless rolling narrow tarmac roads with a couple of nice cafes to choose from, my favourites being The Heron Farm Shop and Taylors. Riding there on a Summer’s day makes all my worries disappear and truly allows me to escape. Due to the nature of the roads, they also remind me of racing the classics in the Netherlands and Belgium which were my favourite races to ride.

Next Purchase:

After recently spending, what feels like my life savings, on my new fully custom Cannondale Supersix Evo…I’m not sure I’ll be in the market for a while
